All secondary industries look for the best value site for their factory, whether it is a small unit on an industrial estate or a factory that covers a huge area. Generally, land is cheaper the further north you travel within Britain and, on a local scale, land tends to be cheaper the further you travel away from city centres.

Flat ground is the best option for the site of a factory as it is much more expensive to build on uneven or steep land.

Proximity to the market

It is valuable for some secondary industries to be close to their market. This reduces the transport costs of sending goods to market and is useful when it is necessary to deliver goods quickly. Newspaper printers tend to be located in major cities so their newspapers can be quickly and easily distributed to the majority of their customers (see Figure 3.25). Assembly industries, such as car manufacturing, are also often located near their markets or close to good transport routes.
